In Brief
The Court dismissed a writ petition challenging the shifting of candidates from reserved categories (OBC/SC/ST) to the open category in a police recruitment selection list. The petitioners, who participated in a 2013 Police Constable recruitment process, argued that 958 reserved category candidates wrongly shifted to open category violated merit and reservation principles, prejudicing open category candidates. The Court held that re-working the selection list for 3295 additional vacancies to adjust previously selected reserved candidates into open slots, done strictly in order of merit and adhering to reservation principles, was legally valid. Since all adjustment steps followed Court-directed procedures and no candidate with lower marks was wrongfully selected ahead of the petitioners, the challenge lacked legal merit.
