In Brief
Punjab National Bank appealed against a High Court order concerning the absorption of 29 canteen workers. The Supreme Court held that this was a fit case to invoke its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to provide finality to the long-running dispute. The Court ordered the Bank to immediately appoint all 29 workers at half the wages of Class-IV employees or minimum state wages (whichever was higher), with benefits equivalent to 23 already-appointed workers, and effect from their original appointment date. The High Court's decision was set aside.
