Ranveer Singh vs State of U.P. Through Secy. & Ors

Bench: 2 — Shiva Kirti Singh

In Brief

Ranveer Singh's land in Uttar Pradesh was acquired under the Land Acquisition Act 1894. After taking possession, Singh agreed via a consent award to accept compensation of Rs. 1,37,58,350 on 27 February 2003, which was paid immediately. Singh later claimed statutory interest under Section 34 of the Act for the period between taking possession (15 February 2001) and payment. The Supreme Court dismissed his claim, holding that by accepting a consent award with an express agreement not to claim any additional amounts, Singh had forfeited his right to claim statutory interest or other statutory benefits. The Court affirmed that consent awards are conclusive and binding, and landowners cannot subsequently seek enhancement or additional statutory payments.
