This was a Writ Petition filed under Article 136 of the Constitution of India. The Supreme Court heard the case in part on 11 April 2017 and directed that it be put up for further hearing on 13 April 2017. Counsel for both the petitioner and the Union of India undertook to file written notes of submissions along with a convenience volume to assist the Court in deciding the petition. The Solicitor General also undertook to file the same on behalf of the Union of India.
