Contempt petitions challenged the State of Uttar Pradesh's alleged non-compliance with Supreme Court interim orders requiring appointment of Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) candidates with 70% marks (general) and 65% marks (reserved categories). The State had appointed 66,655 trainee teachers pursuant to these orders. The Court found no violation: the State's affidavit from October 2016 clearly explained that of 12,091 eligible candidates, only 391 were appointed because others did not participate in counselling or failed to meet district-wise cut-offs. The Court held all appointment criteria were satisfied and rejected the petitions, noting the substantial delay in raising the challenge and the pressing need to fill teacher vacancies under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act.
