Five groups of officers from Central Armed Police Forces (CISF, CRPF, ITBP, BSF, SSB) sought Supreme Court approval to challenge High Court orders limiting deputation-based appointments of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to senior positions in these forces. IPS officers and their association sought to intervene, fearing their deputation opportunities would be eliminated. The Court allowed one IPS officer with direct deputation interest to be impleaded and permitted other IPS officers to intervene, finding they had sufficient interest in the outcome. However, the IPS Association's caveat filing alone did not confer party status; they must separately apply for impleadment.
