The Supreme Court upheld that appellants from Uttar Pradesh could not claim Scheduled Caste reservation for judicial posts in Bihar, even though their caste was recognized in both states. However, finding that prolonged litigation had deprived all parties of alternative opportunities, the Court allowed both the appellants and the original writ petitioners a final chance to compete in the next judicial examination—appellants in general category and petitioners in their respective categories. If appellants qualify, their 2006 appointment continues; if not, it terminates.
