On 25 January 2012, a bus driver in Pune hijacked a public transport bus after his request for a duty change was denied. He drove recklessly, killing eight people and injuring 36 others. While admitting the act, he claimed insanity under Section 84 IPC. The trial and high courts rejected this plea. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction but commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment, finding the appellant was under mental strain with no criminal history, satisfactory jail conduct, and genuine remorse, making the case unsuitable for capital punishment."
