Shewantabai vs Arun and Ors

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

Shewantabai, widow of a deceased man, challenged the validity of a will that left all agricultural property and a house to a neighbour. Though courts at all levels found the will genuine and valid, Shewantabai faced destitution in old age. The beneficiary offered Rs. 3,000 monthly maintenance, which she initially rejected but later accepted. The Supreme Court enhanced this to Rs. 7,500 per month, payable to her for life from the property's income, and ordered arrears from January 2011 to be paid within three months.
