Shyamali Chatterejee vs Municipal Corporation, Bhilai

Bench: 2 — Kurian

In Brief

A daily wage worker challenged the High Court's reduction of compensation for her illegal termination by a Municipal Corporation. Having worked for 15 years, the Labour Court had awarded Rs. 5 lakh, but the High Court reduced it to Rs. 2 lakh. The Supreme Court found this reduction unjust, awarding an additional Rs. 1.5 lakh with 6% interest from termination date, while ordering release of the High Court amount without interest. The Court emphasized that long-serving daily wagers illegally terminated deserve fair compensation reflecting their service and the wrongdoing suffered."
