In Brief
In this 2018 case, a wife filed a transfer petition to move her estranged husband's pending divorce petition. The Supreme Court referred both parties to its Mediation Centre, where they reached a comprehensive settlement. The parties agreed to dissolve their marriage by mutual consent in exchange for a payment of Rs. 18 lakh to the wife towards full settlement of all claims. They also agreed to withdraw an FIR she had lodged against the husband and family members. The Supreme Court granted divorce, quashed the FIR, and disposed of the transfer petition, invoking Article 142 of the Constitution to effectuate the parties' agreed resolution.
