The State of Haryana challenged a High Court judgment that ordered regular pay scales for conductors and drivers who had been initially engaged on consolidated salary. While the Supreme Court affirmed that the High Court correctly applied the principle of equal pay for equal work and that the statutory rules were unconstitutional to the extent they discriminated in wage payments, it modified the arrears order. Following the constitutional bench precedent in Umadevi, arrears were limited to payment from the date of the High Court judgment (1 April 2013) rather than from the date of filing petitions or demand, to respect principles of limitation in monetary claims.
