In Brief
The State of Karnataka appealed against the High Court's acquittal of three accused persons who had been convicted by the trial court of murder, destruction of evidence, and robbery (IPC Sections 302, 201, 392, 397). The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal. The prosecution's case relied on circumstantial evidence: that the deceased was last seen with the accused, recovery of their car, and recovery of gold ornaments from the accused's homes. However, witnesses gave conflicting accounts about when and where these items were recovered and identified. The High Court found these inconsistencies fatal to the prosecution's case. The Supreme Court held that acquittals cannot be disturbed without serious errors or compelling reasons; finding none, it upheld the acquittal."
