State of Uttar Pradesh vs Jai Bir Singh

Bench: 7 — T.S. Thakur

In Brief

This is a reference order directing consolidation of numerous civil appeals and special leave petitions before a larger Bench. The Supreme Court, after hearing counsel and reviewing previous decisions, found that the appeals raise serious constitutional questions of wide-ranging implications that warrant determination by a Nine-Judge Bench. The Court noted that doubts had been expressed about the correctness of the landmark decision in Bangalore Water Supply's case. Accordingly, the papers were directed to be placed before the Chief Justice for constitution of an appropriate Nine-Judge Bench to consider the referred questions."
