The Supreme Court, exercising its power under Article 136 of the Constitution, addressed a Special Leave Petition arising from a landlord-tenant dispute. On 17 February 2017, the Court had directed the petitioner to deposit approximately Rs 50 lakhs in arrears of rent within eight weeks, based on the petitioner's counsel's assurance of willingness to deposit. By the subsequent hearing on 28 April 2017, the petitioner had failed to comply with this order. The Court found the non-compliance unacceptable and ordered the petitioner's immediate detention in judicial custody, with production scheduled for the next hearing on 1 May 2017.
