In Brief
Tata Power Delhi Distribution challenged the National Green Tribunal's direction requiring environmental compensation to be collected from households through electricity bills for river Yamuna pollution remediation. The Supreme Court did not comment on the original direction's correctness but noted the NGT later issued an alternative order (2019) directing the Government to introduce sewerage charges instead. The Court held this revised direction should be implemented within two months and the earlier electricity-collection mechanism stands modified and need not be implemented. The appeals were disposed of accordingly, leaving sewerage charges as the collection mechanism.
