A police constable in Tamil Nadu resigned in June 2017 but attempted to withdraw her resignation a month later, claiming the acceptance was invalid. The High Court allowed her appeal, holding that a 90-day notice requirement meant she could withdraw within that period. The Supreme Court reversed this, holding that once a resignation is formally accepted by the appointing authority, the employee loses all right to withdraw it. The notice period requirement applies to the act of tendering resignation, not to creating a window for withdrawal after acceptance. Upon acceptance, service ceases immediately.
