In Brief
A SAIL employee declared his date of birth as 27 December 1948 when hired in 1972, but later sought to change it to 12 March 1955 (shown in his school certificate), claiming entitlement to seven more years of service and back wages. The Supreme Court held this claim barred by estoppel. Since the younger date would have made him under-age and ineligible for employment at the time of hire, the Court found he deliberately misrepresented his age to secure the job. His decade-long delay in seeking correction, combined with his conduct and proximity to retirement, precluded relief. He was bound by his initial declaration for employment and benefit calculations.
