In Brief
A man applied for a police constable position in Madhya Pradesh. He was selected but later rejected after a Screening Committee discovered he had been involved in a criminal case for offences involving robbery and receiving stolen property. Although acquitted on benefit of doubt in 2015, the Screening Committee deemed him unfit due to the case's moral turpitude. The High Court's Division Bench reversed this, holding acquittal entitles appointment. The Supreme Court allowed the State's appeal, ruling that acquittal based on benefit of doubt is not a clean acquittal and the Screening Committee may properly reject candidates involved in serious criminal cases.
