In Brief
The Supreme Court heard an appeal by U.P. State Sugar Corporation challenging a High Court order directing it to reinstate an ex-apprentice as a permanent Typist on regular wages. The respondent had worked only one year and two months as an apprentice before being terminated. The Court held that such short-term apprenticeship employment does not warrant reinstatement as a permanent employee on full regular wages. Following established precedent, the Court substituted the reinstatement order with compensation of Rs. 2.5 lakhs, to be paid within one month, as the just remedy in the circumstances.
