In Brief
U.P. State Sugar Corporation challenged a High Court order requiring it to employ a former apprentice as a regular Typist with full wages. The apprentice worked only from March 1987 to May 1988 on consolidated wages before the employment ceased. The Supreme Court held that a brief apprenticeship period does not entitle reinstatement on regular wages, despite an earlier Labour Court award favouring reinstatement. Instead, the Court awarded compensation of Rs. 2.5 lakhs, finding this the appropriate remedy in the circumstances of limited engagement as an apprentice."
