Two slum dweller societies (Adarsh and Saidham) challenged orders favoring a third society (Maruti) for slum rehabilitation on shared plots in Mumbai. The Supreme Court found that seven separate plots could support independent rehabilitation schemes for each society. After litigation spanning 14 years, the Court approved a settlement whereby each society develops its plot independently. When Maruti later sought to withdraw consent through a fraudulently altered letter containing only six genuine signatures, the Court rejected it as fabricated and upheld the settlement, allowing all three societies to proceed with independent development benefiting thousands of slum dwellers."
