In Brief
A child aged four years was struck by a bus while crossing the road during a wedding procession. The bus driver was convicted under Section 304-A IPC (death by negligence) and sentenced to two years' imprisonment, plus six months for a traffic offence. On appeal, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction but reduced the sentence to time already served (six months and two days), considering the driver's advanced age of 65, ill health, and sole support of his family. However, a fine of Rs. 75,000 was imposed, payable as compensation to the child's parents. The appeal was partly allowed, with immediate release upon deposit of the fine."
