In Brief
After Telangana's formation in 2014, the State amended agricultural market committee laws, reducing members' terms from three years to one year with retrospective effect from 2012. Existing market committee members challenged this, arguing it violated their vested rights and the equality guarantee under Article 14. The Supreme Court upheld the amendments, holding that a new legislature has full power to enact retrospective laws within constitutional limits. The Court found members were nominated (not appointed through selection), so no vested rights existed. Retrospective amendments removing the legal foundation of a prior court judgment do not constitute judicial overruling. Different committee types cannot be compared under equality principles.
