In Brief
The Delhi Development Authority appealed against the lapse of land acquisition proceedings that were not completed within the statutory period under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. The Supreme Court dismissed the appeals, finding that the proceedings had lapsed. However, the Court granted the Authority one year to initiate fresh acquisition proceedings under Section 11 of the Act. If no fresh proceedings are commenced within this period, the Authority must return possession of the land to the original owners.
