In Brief
Hotel Tramboo Continental disputed rent payments for Government occupancy of its rooms during 1997–2008. The Police Department paid Rs. 200 per day per room under a 1998 Government Order, but the Estate Department paid a different rate. The Supreme Court found no clear rationale for departmental rate variations and referred the matter to the State's Chief Secretary—the competent authority—to determine appropriate rent within four months after hearing both sides. If the fixed rate exceeds Rs. 200 daily, Government must pay the difference within three months; if lower, the hotel must refund the excess within three months.
