In Brief
The Supreme Court partly allowed civil appeals by Jai Narain Vyas University against a High Court order directing regularization of long-service contractual employees. The University employed 15-30 year contract workers in various positions but had regularized similarly situated employees in 1999. Balancing the employees' long service against financial burden, the Court granted notional regularization with service continuity from 1999, but limited actual consequential benefits (salary arrears, etc.) to three years before petition filing, thereby achieving both regularization on grounds of parity and fiscal prudence.
