This case concerns the interpretation of solatium (statutory compensation in addition to market value) under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894 as amended in 1984. The Court held that where an award was passed after the Amendment Act came into force (24 September 1984), claimants are entitled to 30 per cent solatium under the amended Section 23(2). The Court clarified that earlier rulings limiting this benefit to awards made between specific dates do not apply to awards made after the Amendment Act commenced. Additionally, the Court held that interest accrues on the entire compensation amount, including solatium, until payment is received. The appeal was allowed and the respondent directed to pay the correct amount within six weeks."
