In Brief
Tamil Nadu Housing Board challenged a High Court judgment awarding interest on solatium (additional compensation for harassment) to respondents in a land acquisition case. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision, holding that under the Constitution Bench judgment in Gurpreet Singh, claimants are entitled to interest on solatium if the reference court neither expressly rejected nor specifically addressed the claim. Since the claim was never rejected and the High Court kept it open, the respondents could pursue it in execution proceedings. Interest runs from 19 September 2001. The Court left mathematical computations to the reference court.
