The Union of India challenged the High Court's direction permitting a Siddha medical college to admit students beyond its sanctioned intake of 40 seats for 2015-2016 and to make admissions for 2016-2017. The Supreme Court had conditionally upheld these admissions pending inspection of infrastructure. The Union subsequently refused retrospective approval based on a 2018 inspection report claiming assessments for prior years could not be made. The Supreme Court held this violated its order and directed approval of the 58 and 39 over-sanctioned admissions respectively, allowing students to take examinations and have results declared, while cautioning this was fact-specific and no precedent."
