In Brief
The State of Madhya Pradesh challenged the High Court's order quashing a criminal prosecution for offences of impersonation, forgery and cheating (IPC Sections 420, 467, 468). The accused, posing as an Army Major, fraudulently obtained ₹7.4 lakhs through fake appointment letters for Assam Rifles. The High Court quashed the FIR after the complainant and accused settled. The Supreme Court held that serious offences involving fraud and financial crime affecting collective economic interests cannot be quashed merely on settlement, despite being non-compoundable. Such offences are public in nature and must proceed to trial, as they threaten the nation's economic stability and exceed private wrongs.
