In Brief
The State of Madhya Pradesh challenged the High Court's quashing of a criminal prosecution against accused who had impersonated an Army Major, worn a fake uniform, and fraudulently offered jobs while collecting Rs. 7.4 lakh from a complainant. The charges involved offences under IPC sections 420, 467, and 468. Although the complainant later withdrew, the Supreme Court held that serious crimes involving fraud, impersonation, and institutional deception affecting national security and economic interest should not be quashed merely on settlement. Such offences have public and collective impact beyond private dispute and warrant prosecution in the interest of justice. The Court set aside the High Court's order and remitted the case for trial.
