A daily wager (chawkidar) dismissed in 1986 after working for just over one year sought reinstatement with back wages. The Supreme Court rejected reinstatement because he was not appointed through employment exchange or regular procedure. Instead, the Court awarded Rs. 1 lakh as full and final settlement compensation. The Court held that in such cases involving informal appointments and short tenures, monetary compensation is more appropriate than reinstatement with back wages. The appeal was partly allowed with no order as to costs."
