In Brief
In this public law matter concerning infrastructure and administration of consumer protection forums, the Supreme Court addressed systemic deficiencies in consumer dispute redressal fora across India. The Court had previously constituted a three-member committee to examine infrastructure gaps, vacancy positions, and eligibility conditions for forum members. In this order of 15 December 2017, the Court closed the committee after it completed its task, and directed the Union Government to file a comprehensive compliance report within six weeks. The Court reaffirmed its earlier directions requiring framing of model rules for uniform appointment norms and administrative regulations to strengthen supervisory control and professionalization of consumer fora nationwide.
