In Brief

The Supreme Court addressed the infrastructure challenges in consumer protection forums across India. The Court directed all State Governments to adopt Model Rules framed by the Union Government to ensure uniform administration under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. Additionally, the Court requested the Union Government to address critical infrastructure gaps at the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, including creation of 153 pending posts, provision of 37,249 sq. ft. of additional space, and implementation of improved salary and allowance structures to attract qualified personnel and enhance the effectiveness of consumer dispute redressal mechanisms nationwide.
