In Brief
The State of Uttar Pradesh challenged a High Court order directing it to reconsider appointing Chunni Lal to the post of Deputy Collector. The High Court had earlier directed the appointment of Ajay Shankar Pandey to the same post. The Supreme Court held that the High Court's judgment was unsustainable because it directed the appointment of two persons to a single vacant post, which is logically impossible. Additionally, Chunni Lal had retired during the pendency of the appeal, making the relief moot and incapable of implementation. The Court quashed the High Court's judgment.
