In Brief
The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission appealed against a High Court order directing it to furnish additional candidates from a wait-list for Sub Deputy Inspector of Schools posts. After completing a selection for 178 posts, the Commission made an initial recommendation of 156 candidates in August 2010, followed by incremental recommendations through August 2012. When asked in 2013 to provide replacements for candidates who did not join, the Commission refused, citing that the one-year wait-list validity period had expired. The Supreme Court held that the one-year period should be computed from the first substantive recommendation (August 2010), not from the last incremental recommendation, and therefore the Commission was correct in refusing to furnish additional names.
