Subhash Gangadhar Jadhav was convicted of murdering Kanhu Rao by striking him with a wooden rod during a sudden exchange of words while both worked night shift at a factory in May 2005. The High Court affirmed the murder conviction. The Supreme Court, noting the absence of premeditation and the sudden nature of the assault, partly allowed the appeal and modified the conviction from Section 302 IPC (murder) to Section 304 Part-I IPC (causing death without premeditation). The sentence was reduced to time already served, and the appellant was ordered released.
