Ali Hussain Ansari was recommended for appointment as Assistant Teacher in 1987 but never issued an appointment letter until 2006 due to administrative delays involving another candidate's litigation. He worked for three years and retired in 2009. The High Court had awarded him post-retirement benefits and pension calculated from the 1987 recommended date. The Supreme Court modified the order: while Ansari cannot receive salary arrears for the non-working period under the 'no work no pay' principle, he was awarded Rs 4 lakhs compensation on grounds of equity for the administrative delay, while retaining retirement benefits calculated from his actual 2006 joining date.
