Ansal Properties challenged land acquisition proceedings initiated by Haryana. The Court held that because compensation had not been paid to the landowners before the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act 2013 came into force, the old acquisition proceedings had lapsed. The State was directed to initiate fresh proceedings under the 2013 Act within six months. Failure to do so would extinguish the State's claim to the land. The Court clarified that merely possessing the acquired land did not preserve the State's acquisition rights under the new statutory regime.
