The Supreme Court dismissed appeals challenging a 2015 advertisement for direct recruitment of 47 Professors in Uttar Pradesh Government Medical Colleges. The appellants (members of reserved categories) argued that the advertisement violated reservation requirements and that the increased age limit (from 45 to 65 years) violated service rules. The Court held that reservation obligations apply only when a minimum threshold of posts exists per department, and that the number of advertised posts in each specialty was below that threshold. The Court also upheld the age limit increase, finding that Medical Council of India regulations setting a 70-year maximum age prevail over state service rules, and that the increase was justified by a critical shortage of qualified teachers. The appeals were dismissed.
