Professor Rajendra Chaudhary & Anr vs State of Uttar Pradesh & Ors

Bench: 2 — L. Nageswara Rao

In Brief

Professors at government medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh challenged the 2015 recruitment advertisement for not reserving posts for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, and for raising the age limit to 65 years. The Court held that reservations are calculated per specialty/department, not across the entire cadre; as each department had fewer than five posts, no reservations were mandatory. The age increase was justified as the Medical Council of India's professional standards prevailed over state service rules, and relaxation addressed a critical shortage of qualified professors.
