In Brief
A private medical college (Subharti Medical College) in Uttarakhand had admitted 300 students (150 first-year and 150 second-year) when the State Government attempted a takeover. After the affiliating university refused to grant affiliation to the State Government, the takeover became impossible. The Supreme Court directed that the 300 students be accommodated across five other medical colleges (three government and two private) based on NEET merit. The Medical Council of India was asked to permit temporary additional seats. Students were required to clear first-year examinations before advancing, and salary payments were regulated between the State Government and the erstwhile management.
