In Brief
A widow and three daughters claimed compensation for the death of their breadwinner in a 2006 motor vehicle accident. The Motor Accident Tribunal awarded ₹4,15,000, and the High Court enhanced this to ₹14,00,000. However, the High Court denied interest for a period (June 2016 to July 2023) due to delay in supplying case documents. The Supreme Court held that while delay in filing the appeal can result in denial of interest, delays during appeal pendency caused by counsel's procedural lapses should not penalise the claimants. The Court partly allowed the appeal, granting the appellants interest on the enhanced compensation for the disputed period.
